Overview<\/strong>
To strengthen coastal resilience and spur alternative livelihoods, MPF mobilized local communities to restore 5 ha of degraded mangroves around the Galle lagoon\u2014and trained 40 youth as eco-tourism guides.<\/p>

The Challenge<\/strong><\/p>

  • Mangrove loss:<\/strong> Decades of clearance had eroded natural storm buffers.<\/p><\/li>

  • Economic vulnerability:<\/strong> Fisherfolk lacked income diversification when fish stocks dipped.<\/p><\/li>

  • No structured ecotourism:<\/strong> Visitors had few safe, guided experiences to appreciate the lagoon\u2019s biodiversity.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

    Our Approach<\/strong><\/p>

    1. Community-Led Restoration<\/strong><\/p>

      • Engaged 250 volunteers to plant 25,000<\/strong> seedlings of three native Rhizophora and Avicennia species.<\/p><\/li>

      • Established seedling nurseries and monthly survival-rate monitoring protocols.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li>

      • Guide & Hospitality Bootcamp<\/strong><\/p>

        • Delivered a 10-day intensive covering ecological interpretation, visitor safety, basic English, and small-business operations.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li>

        • Eco-Tourism Activation<\/strong><\/p>

          • Partnered with five local guesthouses to create kayak tours, bird-watching walks, and craft-market stops.<\/p><\/li>

          • Developed an online booking system and promotional brochure.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>

            Implementation Highlights<\/strong><\/p>

            • 90%<\/strong> seedling survival at 6 months, verified by MPF ecologists.<\/p><\/li>

            • Formation of five women\u2019s self-help groups weaving and selling local handicrafts to tourists.<\/p><\/li>

            • Training of two local entrepreneurs to manage bookings and guest relations.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>

              • Restored mangroves now protect 2 km<\/strong> of shoreline, reducing erosion and salinity intrusion.<\/p><\/li>
