Overview
When the Colombo Municipal Council’s legacy network began creaking under ever-growing demand, they turned to MillenniumPaths Foundation’s MillenniumIT ESP team for a complete overhaul. Over a focused 10-week engagement, we modernized their core infrastructure to deliver higher capacity, stronger security, and simplified management.
The Challenge
The council’s existing switches were over ten years old, delivering inconsistent Wi-Fi in public areas and frequent downtime in back-office systems. Network traffic was flat-out, support tickets were spiking by 15% quarter-over-quarter, and IT staff lacked real-time visibility into root-cause issues.
Our Approach
- Comprehensive Audit & Design
- Conducted a site survey of all 12 municipal buildings
- Mapped current traffic patterns and bottlenecks
- Hardware Selection & Segmentation
- Deployed high-performance, PoE-capable switches from a top-tier vendor
- Created three logical VLANs for Public Wi-Fi, Administration, and Guest Services
- Centralized Management
- Rolled out a network management system (NMS) with real-time dashboards
- Enabled automated alerts for link failures and anomalous traffic
Implementation Highlights
- Swapped out 150 legacy switches with next-gen models
- Configured secure SSIDs and VLAN tagging to isolate sensitive data
- Trained two in-house network engineers on the new NMS and change-management workflows
Results
- 300% increase in concurrent wireless connections
- 0 unplanned outages in the first six months post-go-live
- 40% reduction in support tickets, freeing IT to focus on strategic initiatives
“MillenniumPaths Foundation didn’t just replace our hardware—they transformed our entire approach to networking. The visibility and reliability we now enjoy are game-changers.”
